Why Can Only God Remove Maya?
Discover why no soul can transcend Maya through self-effort alone. Learn why the mind and intellect cannot overcome Maya, why even Atma-Gyan is insufficient, and why Divine Grace alone can remove Maya and grant God-realization.
Many spiritual seekers assume that because the soul is eternal and divine, it should be capable of freeing itself from Maya through its own effort.
Others believe that knowledge, austerity, meditation, or self-discipline alone are sufficient to transcend Maya.
The Vedic scriptures reject these conclusions.
Lord Krishna declares:
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया ।
मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ॥
daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā ।
mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te ॥
"This Divine Maya of Mine is extremely difficult to overcome. Only those who surrender unto Me cross beyond it." (Bhagavad Gita 7.14)
Why can no soul transcend Maya independently?
To understand why Divine Grace is indispensable, we must first understand the relationship between God, Maya, and the bound soul.
Maya Belongs to God
The Vedic scriptures repeatedly declare that Maya is not an independent power.
Maya belongs to God and functions entirely under His control.
Lord Krishna states:
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया ।
"This Divine Maya of Mine is impossible to overcome." (Bhagavad Gita 7.14)
Because Maya functions entirely under God's control, no one can independently overpower it.
The Vedic scriptures declare that no one is equal to God, let alone greater than Him.
Therefore, if no one can conquer God, no one can conquer His power, Maya, through self-effort alone.
Only God can release the soul from Maya.
The Hierarchy of Creation
The Vedic scriptures explain that the entire material creation unfolds through successive manifestations of Maya:
Shri Krishna
↓
Maya
↓
Mahan (Mahat-tattva)
↓
Ahankar
↓
Panchtanmatra
↓
Panch Mahabhoot
Everything from Mahat-tattva onward belongs to the realm of Maya and constitutes the material universe experienced by the bound soul.
The Hierarchy of the Bound Soul
The scriptures further explain that the bound soul experiences this material world through instruments that themselves function within Maya:
Shri Krishna
↓
Maya
↓
Jeev (divine)
↓
Buddhi
↓
Man
↓
Indriya
The bound soul experiences the world through the mind, intellect, senses, and ego—all of which function within Maya.
Mind, Intellect, and Senses Are Products of Maya
Mind, intellect, ego, and senses are all products of Maya.
They operate within Maya and are influenced by Maya.
A Product of Maya Cannot Transcend Maya
The mind cannot independently remove Maya because the mind itself belongs to Maya.
The intellect cannot independently remove Maya because the intellect itself belongs to Maya.
Just as a prisoner cannot unlock the prison from outside while remaining confined within it, the bound soul cannot independently transcend Maya while functioning through instruments created by Maya.
Self-Realization Does Not Automatically Remove Maya
Atma-Gyan removes bodily identification.
The seeker realizes:
"I am not the body. I am the eternal soul."
However, Atma-Gyan does not automatically remove Maya.
The soul realizes its own spiritual nature, but has not yet realized God.
Therefore complete transcendence of Maya has not yet occurred.
For this reason, even highly advanced Gyanis must ultimately seek refuge in God.
God Alone Possesses Mastery Over Maya
The Vedic scriptures repeatedly declare:
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया ।
मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ॥
"This Divine Maya of Mine is extremely difficult to overcome. Only those who surrender unto Me cross beyond it." (Gita 7.14)
Only the owner of Maya can remove Maya.
Divine Grace Removes Maya Completely
The Vedic scriptures explain that the bound soul cannot directly experience God because it is covered by Maya.
When a soul becomes fully surrendered, the God-realized Guru bestows Grace upon that soul.
At that moment, the material mind becomes divine, Maya is removed, and the soul comes directly under the control of God.
All the coverings of Maya disappear simultaneously.
The soul becomes free from ignorance, attachment, and delusion and directly experiences God.
This is why Divine Grace is indispensable on every spiritual path.
The soul cannot remove Maya through self-effort alone. The final removal of Maya always occurs through the Grace of the God-realized saint whom one has accepted as Guru.
The Essential Conclusion
No soul can cross Maya through its own effort.
Mind, intellect, and self-effort alone are insufficient because they function within Maya itself.
Only when the soul sincerely turns toward God and receives Divine Grace does Maya lose its hold.
Therefore Divine Grace is indispensable for liberation and God-realization.
