Grace Is Necessary at Every Stage of the Spiritual Journey
Why is Divine Grace necessary throughout the entire spiritual journey? The scriptures explain that Grace is required not only for realization, but also for satsang, Guru, purification, liberation from Māyā, and spiritual awakening itself.
📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry
We have seen that Divine Grace removes ignorance and reveals truth.
Without Grace, the soul remains covered by Māyā and unable to realize God.
But another question now arises:
Does Grace operate only at the final moment of realization,
or is Grace necessary throughout the entire spiritual journey?
The scriptures declare that Grace is required at every stage.
Grace Is Not Needed Only at the End
Many people think that Grace is needed only for the final attainment of God.
But the scriptures describe Grace very differently.
Grace does not operate only at liberation.
It operates from the very beginning of spiritual awakening.
Without Grace:
- true spiritual longing does not awaken
- genuine understanding does not arise
- real progress does not occur
From the first movement toward God until final realization, Grace remains essential.
Grace Is Required for Freedom from Māyā
The mind is bound by Māyā and cannot independently free itself from its influence.
The Ramayan states:
“छूटे न राम कृपा बिनु नाथ कहाँ पद पाई॥”
Without the Grace of God, liberation from Māyā is impossible.
The mind is material and weakened by ignorance, while Māyā is a Divine power of God Himself.
How can the bound mind overcome such a force through its own limited effort alone?
This is why spiritual effort, though necessary for purification, remains insufficient by itself.
Grace alone finally frees the mind from bondage.
Grace Is Required for True Satsang
The scriptures further explain that even genuine satsang is received only through Grace.
The Ramayan says:
“बिनु सत्संग विवेक न होई। राम कृपा बिनु सुलभ न सोई॥”
Without God’s Grace, true satsang itself is not attained.
Countless forms of association exist in the world.
But the company that truly awakens Divine understanding is rare.
The scriptures therefore explain:
Even the opportunity to hear truth, reflect upon it, and turn toward God arises through Grace.
Grace Is Required for the Association of Saints and Guru
The Ramayan further declares:
“बिनु हरि कृपा मिलहिं नहिं संता॥”
Without the Grace of God, true Saints are not attained.
And again:
“संत बिषुद्ध मिलहिं पुनि तेही। राम कृपा करि चितवहिं जेही॥”
Only those upon whom God bestows Grace receive pure Saints.
This is an extremely profound principle.
Even the guidance that leads the soul toward God is itself a manifestation of Grace through satsang, Saints, and Guru.
Thus, Grace does not merely complete the spiritual journey.
Grace initiates, sustains, guides, and fulfills it.
Grace Operates Throughout the Entire Journey
The scriptures therefore present Grace as the essential principle operating throughout spiritual life.
Grace:
- awakens longing
- grants satsang
- brings the soul to Guru
- purifies the mind
- removes ignorance
- frees the soul from Māyā
- and ultimately reveals God
Without Grace, the soul remains bound.
With Grace, the entire path becomes possible.
