Grace Alone Removes Ignorance

📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry

We have seen that Divine Grace is not merely kindness or compassion.
It is God revealing Himself to the soul through His own Divine power.

But another question now arises:

If Grace reveals God,
how does that revelation actually occur?
What does Grace do within the soul?

The scriptures explain that Grace removes the ignorance that prevents the soul from knowing God.

The Root Problem: Ignorance

The soul is eternally related to God.
Yet it does not experience Him.

Why?

Because the soul is covered by ignorance born of Māyā.

Under this ignorance, the soul:

  • mistakes the body for the self
  • mistakes temporary pleasure for lasting happiness
  • mistakes the material world for ultimate reality
  • forgets its eternal relationship with God

Thus, the problem is not that God is absent.
The problem is that the soul remains covered.

Ignorance Cannot Remove Itself

The scriptures explain that Māyā functions through illusion.

The soul perceives:

  • permanence in the temporary
  • happiness in worldly enjoyment
  • fulfillment in material achievement

But these perceptions are mistaken.

The Ramayan compares this illusion to mistaking the glimmer inside a shell for silver or seeing water in a desert mirage.

Even though the perception appears real, it is based upon भ्रम (illusion).

This is the central difficulty:
A covered mind cannot independently remove its own covering.

No matter how much the soul thinks, analyzes, or struggles, the ignorance produced by Māyā cannot fully destroy itself.

Grace Reveals Divine Knowledge

For this reason, Divine knowledge does not arise independently through material effort alone.

It is revealed through Grace.

The Ramayan declares:

“जासु कृपा अस भ्रम मिटि जाई। गिरिजा सो कृपालु रघुराई॥”

By His Grace, this illusion is destroyed.

Grace does not create truth.
Truth already exists.

Grace removes the ignorance that prevents the soul from perceiving truth.

Just as darkness cannot remain when light appears, ignorance cannot remain when Divine knowledge is revealed.

Thus:
Grace → Divine Knowledge
Divine Knowledge → Removal of Ignorance
Removal of Ignorance → Realization

Divine Knowledge Is Revealed, Not Manufactured

Spiritual realization is not the creation of new knowledge through intellectual effort.

It is the revelation of Divine truth.

For this reason:

  • God cannot be known merely through study
  • ignorance cannot be removed merely through reasoning
  • realization cannot be forced through effort alone

When Grace descends:

  • Divine knowledge awakens
  • illusion dissolves
  • the soul begins to perceive reality correctly

Grace and Direct Experience

As long as ignorance remains, God remains theoretical.

One may:

  • study scriptures
  • discuss philosophy
  • perform practices
  • understand concepts intellectually

Yet realization still remains absent.

But when Grace removes ignorance, God is no longer merely believed in or discussed.

He becomes directly experienced.

If Grace removes ignorance and reveals truth,
does Grace operate only at realization,
or throughout the entire spiritual journey?
