If We Seek Happiness, Why Are We Never Satisfied?
If the self were material, material happiness should completely satisfy it. Yet dissatisfaction continues. This inquiry becomes the beginning of understanding the true nature of the soul.
📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry
In the previous article, we saw that:
- the material world is made of Maya,
- the material mind is also made of Maya,
- and therefore the mind naturally runs toward worldly objects.
This explains why attachment toward the world feels natural.
Yet another question still remains unresolved.
If the mind constantly runs toward worldly happiness, then why does complete fulfillment never arrive?
This question becomes the beginning of inquiry into our true nature.
Every Being Seeks Happiness
Every living being seeks happiness.
No one acts without the hope of becoming happy.
Whether a person pursues:
- wealth,
- relationships,
- power,
- comfort,
- pleasure,
- knowledge,
- or achievement,
behind every pursuit lies the same desire:
“Through this, I will become fulfilled.”
This is universal.
If the Self Were Material...
Now we must think carefully.
If our true self were material in nature, then material objects should be capable of fully satisfying us.
Why?
Because fulfillment naturally occurs when something attains that which corresponds to its own nature.
For example:
- thirst is satisfied by water,
- hunger is satisfied by food,
- and physical exhaustion is relieved by rest.
Similarly, if the self were material, then material happiness should completely satisfy it.
But our actual experience seems to suggest otherwise.
Experience Reveals Something Deeper
Living beings have endlessly pursued worldly happiness.
Again and again the human mind says:
- “Now I will become fulfilled.”
- “This attainment will complete me.”
- “This object will finally satisfy me.”
Sometimes temporary pleasure does arise.
Yet complete fulfillment has not even once been attained.
Even after repeated enjoyment:
- dissatisfaction returns,
- restlessness returns,
- and the search begins again.
According to Jagadguruttam Swami Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, this is not accidental.
It reveals something profound about our true nature.
Dissatisfaction Is Evidence
If material happiness were truly capable of satisfying the self, then after endlessly pursuing worldly pleasure through countless lives, fulfillment should already have been attained.
Yet the search continues.
This means the problem is deeper than lack of attainment.
The root problem lies in mistaken identity.
We continue searching for fulfillment in material objects because we still identify ourselves with the material condition.
But the self itself is not material.
The First Great Conclusion
This leads to an important conclusion.
If material happiness cannot fully satisfy the self, then the self itself must be beyond matter.
This becomes the beginning of spiritual self-inquiry.
The question is no longer merely:
“How can I become happy?”
The deeper question becomes:
“Who is the one seeking happiness?”
To answer this, we must now examine the identities we ordinarily mistake to be the self.
