The Soul — The Self

Who are we really? This section explores the true nature of the soul, the cause of material dissatisfaction, and why only Divine Bliss can fully satisfy the self.

The Soul — The Self

📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry

In the previous section, we saw that surrender requires the mind to turn away from false dependence on the material world.

But this raises a deeper question.

Why is the mind attached to the world in the first place?

Why does it keep searching for happiness in temporary objects, even after repeated disappointment?

To understand this, we must now ask the most basic question of spiritual life:

Who am I?

Am I the body?
Am I the senses?
Am I the mind?
Or am I something beyond all of these?

According to Jagadguruttam Swami Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, the root problem of worldly bondage is mistaken identity. Until we understand the true nature of the self, the search for happiness remains misdirected.

This section examines the nature of the soul and reveals why the Divine soul can never be fully satisfied by material happiness.

📖 Read in Order

1. The Material Mind and the Problem of Misidentification

The material mind naturally runs toward the material world because both are formed from Maya.

2. If We Seek Happiness, Why Are We Never Satisfied?

If the self were material, material happiness should satisfy it. But repeated experience proves otherwise.

3. Are We the Body, Mind, or Senses?

The body changes, the senses become inactive, and the mind fluctuates — yet the “I” remains.

4. The Soul Is an Eternal Part of God

The scriptures reveal that the soul is eternal, conscious, subtle, imperishable, and an eternal part of God.

5. Why the Mind Remains Bound to the World

Even after knowing the soul is Divine, the materially conditioned mind remains bound by old identification and worldly attraction.

Where This Inquiry Leads

Once we understand that the soul is not material, the next question naturally arises:

If the soul is Divine, why is it bound in the material world?

To answer this, we must now examine the nature of the material world, the power of Maya, and how bondage continues.
