Why the Mind Remains Bound to the World
The soul seeks eternal fulfillment, yet the materially conditioned mind remains absorbed in Maya. This creates the inner conflict of material bondage.
📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry
In the previous articles, we discovered that:
- the soul is not material,
- the soul is distinct from the body, mind, and senses,
- and the soul is an eternal part of God.
We also saw that the soul seeks happiness because its true nature is connected to God, who is Sat-Chit-Anand.
Yet another question still remains.
If the soul is Divine in nature, then why does the mind remain so deeply attached to the material world?
Why does worldly attraction continue even after repeated dissatisfaction?
To understand this, we must now examine the deeper condition of material bondage.
The Intellect Remains Convinced
Although the soul seeks eternal fulfillment, the materially conditioned intellect remains convinced that happiness lies in the world.
Again and again the mind thinks:
- “This object will satisfy me.”
- “This attainment will complete me.”
- “Through worldly happiness I will finally become fulfilled.”
Even after repeated disappointment, this conviction continues.
This is the power of material conditioning.
The Habit of Worldly Pursuit
For countless lives, the mind has flowed outward toward material objects.
Thus attachment to the world has become deeply habitual.
The mind repeatedly seeks fulfillment through:
- pleasure,
- recognition,
- possessions,
- relationships,
- achievements,
- and sensory enjoyment.
Even when temporary pleasure fades, the mind again projects hope onto another object.
Thus the cycle continues endlessly.
The Root of Bondage
The real bondage of the soul is not external imprisonment.
The root bondage is misidentification.
The living being identifies itself with:
the body,
the mind,
worldly desires,
and material experiences.
Because of this false identity, attachment to the material world continues naturally.
The soul itself is Divine, yet the materially conditioned mind remains absorbed in Maya.
This creates inner conflict:
- the soul seeks lasting fulfillment,
- while the mind continuously runs toward temporary objects.
Why Mere Material Attainment Cannot Solve the Problem
No amount of material attainment can remove this inner restlessness.
Why?
Because the problem is not merely external lack.
The root problem lies in mistaken understanding.
As long as the self continues identifying with the material condition, the search for fulfillment will remain directed toward the world.
Thus even repeated enjoyment cannot bring permanent peace.
The Need for Reorientation
At this stage, spiritual life begins to take on a new meaning.
The problem is no longer merely:
“How can I attain more happiness?”
The real problem becomes:
“How can consciousness be redirected toward its true object?”
This is why:
- spiritual knowledge is necessary,
- Divine Grace is necessary,
- and purification of the mind becomes necessary.
Without inner reorientation, the mind naturally continues flowing toward Maya.
The Inquiry Now Moves Forward
The living being has forgotten its true identity and become absorbed in the material condition.
Therefore, to progress further, we must now understand:
- the nature of the material world,
- the power of Maya,
- and how material bondage continues.
This becomes the next stage of inquiry.
