Premanand (प्रेमानन्द)
Premanand is the eternal bliss of divine love experienced through realization of Bhagavan by His Divine Grace.
Premanand (प्रेमानन्द | premānanda) literally means the bliss of divine love. It is the infinite transcendental bliss experienced by souls who attain perfect loving union with Bhagavan (भगवान् | bhagavān), the Supreme Personal God.
Unlike material pleasure, Premanand is eternal, ever-increasing, ever-new, and completely beyond the influence of Maya (माया | māyā).
It is bestowed through Divine Grace upon souls practicing devotion (Bhakti). It can never be earned through personal effort alone.
The Shrimad Bhagavat teaches that the unparalleled God is known in three distinct ways:
वदन्ति तत्त्वविदस्तत्त्वं यज्ज्ञानमद्वयम् ।
ब्रह्मेति परमात्मेति भगवानिति शब्द्यते ॥
vadanti tattva-vidas tattvaṁ yaj jñānam advayam |
brahmeti paramātmeti bhagavān iti śabdyate ||
- Brahm (ब्रह्म | brahma) — the Impersonal aspect of God.
- Paramatma (परमात्मा | paramātmā) — the Supreme Soul dwelling within every being.
- Bhagavan (भगवान् | bhagavān) — the Supreme Divine Personality possessing infinite names, forms, qualities, and loving pastimes.
Each realization bestows a distinct transcendental experience of divine bliss.
The bliss of realizing the Impersonal Brahm is called Brahmanand (ब्रह्मानन्द | brahmānanda).
The bliss experienced through loving realization of Bhagavan is called Premanand.
The Bhakti scriptures describe Premanand as the highest spiritual bliss because it arises from an eternal loving relationship with God rather than realization of His impersonal aspect alone.
Characteristics of Premanand
Premanand is characterized by:
- direct loving relationship with Bhagavan
- eternal and ever-increasing bliss
- complete freedom from Maya
- uninterrupted experience of God's names, forms, qualities, and divine pastimes
- fulfillment of the soul's eternal nature as a loving servant of God
Unlike material happiness, Premanand never diminishes and never reaches a limit.
Premanand is not an emotional state of the material mind. It is transcendental and experienced only through realization of Bhagavan.
Relationship to Brahmanand
The scriptures glorify Brahmanand as infinitely beyond every form of material happiness.
Yet they also declare that Premanand is immeasurably greater.
The Upanishads declare that even if Brahmanand were multiplied by 10¹⁷, it would still not equal a single drop of Premanand. This comparison illustrates the limitless sweetness of divine love.
For this reason, many exemplars of Brahm-gyan became immersed in the bliss of divine love of Sakar Form of God.
