Ashtayami Seva (अष्टयामी सेवा)

Ashtayami Seva (अष्टयामी सेवा)

Ashtayami Seva (अष्टयामी सेवा | aṣṭayāmī sevā) refers to the loving service of The Divine Couple, Shri Radha Krishna throughout the entire day.

Traditionally, a 24-hour day is divided into eight three-hour periods, called yaam (याम | yāma).

Ashtayami Seva literally refers to seva performed across these eight yaam. Through the changing periods of the day, the devotee lovingly remembers Shri Radha Krishna, contemplates Their lilas, and thinks of ways to serve and please Them.

What Are the Eight Sevas?

To help aspirants remain immersed in Divine remembrance throughout the day, Shri Vallabhacharya gave a practical blueprint for lovingly serving Shri Krishna through relatable activities in each of the eight periods:

  1. Mangala (मङ्गल | maṅgala) — Shri Krishna is lovingly awakened in the morning.
  2. Shringar (शृङ्गार | śṛṅgāra) — He is bathed, dressed, and adorned for the day.
  3. Gwal (ग्वाल | gvāla) — He goes out with the cows and His cowherd companions.
  4. Rajbhog (राजभोग | rājabhoga) — His principal midday meal is offered, followed by rest.
  5. Utthapan (उत्थापन | utthāpana) — He is awakened from His afternoon rest.
  6. Bhog (भोग | bhoga) — an afternoon offering is made.
  7. Sandhya Aarti (संध्या आरती | saṃdhyā āratī) — Shri Krishna returns with the cows in the evening and Aarti is performed.
  8. Shayan (शयन | śayana) — He is lovingly prepared for rest at night.

The purpose of this framework is not simply to observe eight periods or complete eight prescribed activities. It gives the mind repeated opportunities to remain lovingly engaged with the Divine throughout the day.

How Is Ashtayami Seva Practiced in the Mind?

Ashtayami Seva is not limited to external service.

Shri Maharaj Ji teaches that Ashtayami Seva can also be performed in the mind as Manasi Seva. Through Roopdhyan, the devotee brings the Divine form of Shri Radha Krishna into the mind and lovingly participates in Their seva.

The changing periods of the day naturally provide ever-new opportunities for remembrance: awakening Them, adorning Them, preparing food for Them, accompanying Their lilas, attending to Their comfort, welcoming Them home, and preparing Them for rest.

In this way, Ashtayami Seva provides a practical framework for weaving Roopdhyan into the entire day.

Why It Matters

In Raganuga Bhakti, the many details of devotional practice remain subordinate to two governing principles:

Love God. Do not forget Him.

Ashtayami Seva serves these principles by giving the mind a Divine focus as the day continually changes. Thus, ordinary time itself becomes an opportunity for loving remembrance and seva.

This also gives Ashtayami Seva a natural relationship with Nirantar — continuous remembrance. The eight yaam provide a framework; loving and remembering the Divine Beloved is the purpose.
