Radha and Krishna Are One in Two Eternal Forms

If Radha and Krishna appear in two Divine forms, what is Their true relationship, and how should the devotee meditate upon Them?

Shri Radha rests affectionately beside Shri Krishna as He plays the flute in a flowering garden at sunset.
Shri Radha and Shri Krishna appear together in two intimate, eternal Divine forms while sharing one loving presence.

📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry

The preceding inquiry established why devotion may turn especially toward Shri Krishna: His leelas make meditation easier, all five Bhavs were revealed in His descension, and the sweetest leela ras of Divine love was revealed through Him.

But this brings the inquiry to its final point. Who exactly is the Supreme Object of Devotion toward whom this love is directed?

The scriptures now reveal a deeper truth. The same absolute Supreme Personality of God—Poorntam Purushottam Brahm (पूर्णतम पुरुषोत्तम ब्रह्म | pūrṇatama puruṣottama brahma)—exists as Radha and Krishna.

Radha and Krishna Are One

The Upnishad states:

येयं राधा यश्च कृष्णो रसाब्धिर्देहेनैकः क्रीडनार्थं द्विधाऽभूत्॥
yeyaṁ rādhā yaśca kṛṣṇo rasābdhir dehenaikaḥ krīḍanārthaṁ dvidhā'bhūt
(Upnishad; no further citation given)

“Radha and Krishna are one, but for the sake of leela, They are in two forms.”

The scriptural testimony establishes both truths together: Radha and Krishna are one, and yet They exist in two forms.

The distinction between Their forms therefore does not mean that They are two separate Divine realities. Their two forms exist for the sake of Divine leela (लीला | līlā).

These leelas are eternal and so are Their forms.

Radha Is the Soul of Krishna

Ved Vyas further states:

आत्मा तु राधिका तस्य।
ātmā tu rādhikā tasya
(Ved Vyas; no further citation given)

“Radha is the Soul of Krishna.”

The Upnishads describe Radha further:

हरेः सर्वेश्वरी । कृष्णप्राणाधिदेवी ॥
hareḥ sarveśvarī । kṛṣṇaprāṇādhidevī ॥
Upnishads

“She is the Swamini of Krishna; She is the life and soul of Krishna.”

Radha is therefore described as Krishna's Swamini (स्वामिनी | svāminī), His Soul, and His very life.

These statements do not introduce two independent Supreme realities. They deepen the scriptural revelation already established: Radha and Krishna are one, eternally manifest in two Divine forms for leela.

How Should the Devotee Meditate on Them?

Once this relationship is understood, the practical question becomes simple.

The devotee may meditate upon:

  • Daughter of King Vrishbhanu Radha Rani and Nandnandan Shyam Sundar together,
  • Radha Rani separately, or
  • Shyam Sundar separately.

There is no single compulsory form of meditation established here. The devotee may choose according to personal preference.

Thus the Supreme Object of Devotion may be contemplated as Radha and Krishna together or as either Divine form separately.

Where This Inquiry Leads

The inquiry that began with the question of which Divine form a devotee should choose now reaches its conclusion.

The scriptures establish that Radha and Krishna are one absolute Supreme Divine Reality in two eternal forms. Their two forms exist for eternal leela, and Radha is described as the Soul, Swamini, and very life of Krishna.

The devotee may therefore meditate upon Vrishbhanu-nandini Radhikaji and Nandnandan Shyam Sundar together or separately according to personal choice.

What began as a practical question about choosing a form of God for devotion has led to the revelation of the Supreme Object of Devotion—Shri Radha Krishna.

Part 3 of 3 — The Supreme Object of Devotion — Shri Radha Krishna

The inquiry into the Supreme Object of Devotion is now complete: the same Poorntam Purushottam Brahm exists eternally as Radha and Krishn, who may be meditated upon together or separately according to the devotee's personal choice.
