Why God Cannot Be Attained by Effort Alone
Why can God not be attained through effort alone? The scriptures explain that the finite mind cannot independently grasp the Infinite. Realization becomes possible only when God reveals Himself through Grace.
📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry
We have understood that God exists.
We have also understood that He is infinite, all-powerful, and beyond material limitation.
Then a question naturally arises:
If God exists, why do we not know Him?
The Limits of Human Effort
Through effort, human beings acquire knowledge, skill, and achievement.
It therefore seems natural to assume:
“If I try hard enough, I should be able to know God.”
But this assumption is incorrect.
God Is Beyond the Reach of the Mind and Intellect
The scriptures repeatedly explain that the material mind cannot independently know God.
No matter how refined the intellect becomes, it remains limited, while God is infinite and beyond material nature.
For this reason, effort alone cannot bridge the distance between the finite soul and the Infinite Divine.
Why Effort Alone Fails
To understand this clearly, consider a simple principle:
A limited instrument cannot grasp the unlimited.
No matter how much a person thinks, analyzes, or studies, the effort remains confined within the boundaries of the material mind.
Even if one spends countless lifetimes trying to understand God through effort alone, the result will remain incomplete.
The scriptures confirm:
God cannot be known merely through self-effort, even after countless lifetimes of striving.
The Fundamental Problem
The issue is not lack of effort.
The issue is the nature of the instrument.
We are trying to know the infinite through something that is:
- finite
- limited
- influenced by Māyā
This is why effort alone cannot succeed.
Spiritual effort purifies and prepares the mind, but by itself it cannot reveal God.
Then How Can God Be Known?
If effort is insufficient, does that mean God-realization is impossible?
No.
The same scriptures that declare the limitation of effort also reveal the solution:
God is known only when He reveals Himself.
In other words, God-realization does not occur by soul reaching Him though self-effort
but by His revealing Himself to the soul.
The Turning Point
This changes the entire understanding of spiritual life.
It is no longer:
“How can I reach God?”
But rather:
“How can I become eligible for His Grace?”
Because without His Grace:
- knowledge does not arise
- ignorance is not removed
- realization does not occur
