Why Does The All-Powerful God Descend?
If God can accomplish everything without descending, why does He take Avatar? The inquiry begins with the reasons for God's descension.
📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry
God is all-capable. He does not need to descend into this world in order to exercise His power. This raises a natural question: if God can accomplish everything without descending, why does He take Avatar at all?
The scriptures do not restrict God's descension to one purpose. His reasons are innumerable. To understand Avatar, therefore, we must look beyond the idea that God descends merely because some particular task needs to be accomplished.
The Reasons for God's Descension Are Innumerable
The scriptures state:
हरि अवतार हेतु जेहि होई। इदमित्थं कहि जात न सोई॥
hari avatāra hetu jehi hoī, idamitthaṁ kahi jāta na soī
The reasons for God's descension cannot be definitively limited to this or that alone.
It is therefore not possible to say that God descends for only one specific reason. Different purposes may be emphasized, but they cannot exhaust the reasons for Avatar.
Among these innumerable reasons, the most important reason presented here is God's causeless Grace.
God is Atmaram Poornkam (आत्माराम पूर्णकाम | ātmārāma pūrṇakāma)—fully satisfied within Himself. He has nothing to gain from anyone and no desire that remains to be fulfilled. Therefore, His actions are not performed for His own benefit. They are for the benefit of others.
It is God's nature to causelessly shower His Grace upon souls. It is this nature that causes His descension.
But how does His descension benefit the soul?
God Reveals Means Through Which Souls Can Attain Him
The heart must first be purified in order to attain God. Even the path of gyan (ज्ञान | jñāna), or non-dualistic devotion to Nirakar Brahm (निराकार ब्रह्म | nirākāra brahma), cannot be entered without this purification.
The qualifications for the path of gyan are extremely demanding. A person possessing them may be only one among millions.
Shankaracharya states:
शुद्ध्यति हि नान्तरात्मा कृष्ण-पदाम्भोजभक्तिमृते।
śuddhyati hi nāntarātmā kṛṣṇa-padāmbhoja-bhaktimṛte
Without devotion to the lotus feet of Shri Krishna, the heart cannot become purified.
Without purification of the heart, how could one become qualified for the path of gyan? And even among those rare souls who become qualified, only a handful may actually attain liberation from Maya (माया | māyā).
Because God is causelessly Gracious, He descends into this world and reveals His innumerable names, virtues, and leelas. By taking their support, uncountable sinful, mayic souls can cross the ocean of Maya and receive Divine love.
The example of Valmiki shows the power contained even in God's name. Before becoming Valmiki, the dacoit Ratnakar was so sinful that he could not utter the name of Bhagwan Ram. Instead, he repeated the name backwards. Yet through the power of God's name, he became a great Brahmrishi.
Sage Ved Vyas states:
भवेऽस्मिन् क्लिश्यमानानामविद्याकामकर्मभि: ।
श्रवणस्मरणार्हाणि करिष्यन्निति केचन ॥ ३५ ॥
bhave'smin kliśyamānānām avidyā-kāma-karmabhiḥ
śravaṇa-smaraṇārhāṇi kariṣyann iti kecana
(Bhagavatam 1.8.35)
God performs deeds worthy of hearing and remembrance for souls suffering in this world through ignorance, desire, and action.
For uncountable lifetimes, the mind has interacted with the material world. Its natural inclination is therefore toward material people and objects. Through Avatar, God gives the mind His names and leelas to lovingly remember and increase its love for Him.
Thus, God does not descend because He lacks the power to accomplish something without descending. Out of His causeless Grace, He gives uncountable souls means through which they can turn toward Him and ultimately attain Him.
But there is another reason for God's descension—one that reaches even those extraordinarily rare souls who successfully attain the goal of gyan.
God Gives Even Paramhansas the Bliss of Divine Love
The Bhagavatam states:
तथा परमहंसानां मुनीनाममलात्मनाम्।
भक्तियोगविधानार्थं कथं पश्येम हि स्त्रियः॥
tathā paramahaṁsānāṁ munīnām amalātmanām
bhakti-yoga-vidhānārthaṁ kathaṁ paśyema hi striyaḥ
(Bhagavatam 1.8.20)
Although the Paramhansas were already absorbed in the Bliss of Nirakar Brahm, God appeared in this world in His eternal personal form to immerse them in the Bliss of Divine love.
Great Paramhansas such as Sanakadi (Kumars), Janak, and Shukdev had attained the Bliss of Nirakar Brahm. Yet they abandoned that impersonal realization and became absorbed in the Bliss of God's personal form.
This reveals another reason for Avatar.
If there had been no descension, followers of the path of Nirakar Brahm could have declared that God's personal form does not exist.
But Nirakar Brahm and God's personal form are not two separate existences. As established earlier in Gyan Yog, they are two forms of the same God.
Through Avatar, those already absorbed in the Bliss of Nirakar Brahm can experience the sweetness of God's personal form and Divine love. Their experience also establishes that God's impersonal and personal forms are one.
Their attraction to God's personal form was so powerful that Tulsidasji writes:
बरबस ब्रह्म सुखहिं मन त्यागा।
barabasa brahma sukhahiṁ mana tyāgā
The mind forcibly abandons the Bliss of the impersonal form and becomes attached to the personal form of the same God.
Thus, even great Paramhansas such as Janak and Shukdev, who had attained the goal of gyan, became forcibly attracted to the Bliss of God's personal form.
God's causeless Grace through Avatar therefore reaches from sinful, mayic souls seeking God all the way to Paramhansas who have already attained the Bliss of Nirakar Brahm.
God's Purposes Cannot Be Reduced to a List
There are still other well-known reasons for God's descension:
- the establishment of dharm;
- the destruction of demons;
- the protection of devotees.
But these too are only some among innumerable purposes.
Even an ordinary person may go somewhere with several aims to fulfill. God's actions and purposes during His descension cannot possibly be counted.
Through Avatar, God also reveals His qualities, such as His Grace. Hearing about these qualities strengthens the soul's faith and resolve and enables it to proceed more quickly toward God.
No finite list, therefore, can exhaust the purposes of God's descension.
Where This Inquiry Leads
An all-powerful God does not descend because He is unable to accomplish something without descending. He is Atmaram Poornkam—fully satisfied within Himself, with nothing to gain and no desire to fulfill.
The reasons for His descension are innumerable, but the most important reason presented here is His causeless Grace.
Even entering the path of gyan requires purification of the heart through Bhakti. Its qualifications are extraordinarily difficult, and only a handful of those who qualify attain its goal. Yet through Avatar, God gives uncountable mayic souls His names, virtues, and leelas as means through which they can lovingly turn their minds toward Him. Ratnakar's transformation into Valmiki demonstrates the power contained even in God's name.
And God's Grace through Avatar extends further still. Paramhansas such as Sanakadi, Janak, and Shukdev, who had already attained the Bliss of Nirakar Brahm, became forcibly attracted to the Bliss of God's personal form. Their experience also establishes that God's impersonal and personal forms are one.
Establishing dharm, destroying demons, protecting devotees, and revealing His qualities are also among the purposes of His descension. But God's purposes cannot be confined to these—or to any finite list.
This resolves why an all-capable God descends.
But His appearance in the material world immediately raises another question:
When God appears among material souls, takes birth, possesses a body, and performs actions, are His birth, body, and actions material like ours?
That is where the inquiry turns next.
