All Descensions of God Are Complete and Equal

📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry

We have established why the all-powerful God descends. His reasons are innumerable, and the foremost reason presented is His causeless Grace. Through Avatar, He gives souls means to turn their minds toward Him, and even Paramhansas established in the Bliss of Nirakar Brahm can become absorbed in the Bliss of His personal form.

But God's descension creates another question. When He appears in this material world, His body and actions can look like ours. Does God actually acquire a material body when He descends? And are some Avatars greater or more complete than others?

The scriptures first establish the nature of God's birth, body, and actions.

God's Birth, Body, and Actions Are Not Material

The Bhagavad Gita states:

जन्मकर्म च मे दिव्यम्।
janma karma ca me divyam
(Bhagavad Gita)

My birth and actions are Divine.

Although God appears among material souls, His birth and actions are not material.

To material mind and senses, God's body might appear material and His actions may appear ordinary. But appearance does not determine their nature. The bodies of all God's descensions are Divine and also eternal.

This distinction is essential. Avatar does not mean that God acquires an ordinary material body like ours when He descends.

But once this is understood, another misconception can arise. If God's different descensions are all Divine, could some nevertheless contain more of God than others?

God Cannot Be Divided Into Fractions

The scriptures establish:

सर्वे पूर्णाः शाश्वताश्च देहास्तस्य परात्मनः॥
sarve pūrṇāḥ śāśvatāśca dehāstasya parātmanaḥ

All avatar of the Supreme God are complete and eternal.

Every descension of God is perfect and complete.

There is no greater Avatar and lesser Avatar in the sense that one contains more of God and another contains less. No Avatar represents half, one-quarter, or some other fraction of God's complete Divinity.

God cannot be divided into fractions. He remains complete and unchanged—always, everywhere, and under all circumstances.

This has an important consequence for worship.

Considering One Avatar Superior to Another Is Namaparadh

Spiritual aspirants can develop a tendency to think:

The form of God I worship is superior. Other forms are inferior.

This is not merely an innocent preference. Considering one form of God superior and another inferior constitutes Namaparadh (नामापराध | nāmāparādha), a grave spiritual transgression.

It must be avoided even unconsciously.

A devotee may naturally love one form of God more than another. But that personal attraction does not mean that God possesses more Divinity in the preferred form.

God remains God in every descension. If He could actually be divided into greater and smaller portions, He would no longer be God.

Yet this raises an obvious question.

If all Avatars are equally complete, why are Shri Ram and Shri Krishna given such special significance?

Why Shri Ram and Shri Krishna Have Special Significance

Shri Ram and Shri Krishna have far more followers than many other descensions of God.

But the reason is not that They possess more Divinity.

More leelas were revealed during the descensions of Shri Ram and Shri Krishna. These leelas give devotees abundant opportunities to remember God, and through that remembrance the mind can become attached to Him more quickly.

It is from this standpoint—the attachment of the mind—that the descensions of Shri Ram and Shri Krishna have special significance.

Their greater revelation of leelas does not mean greater Divinity.

No Avatar has a deficiency of Divinity. No Avatar has a surplus of Divinity. None is inferior or superior to another.

Shri Maharaj Ji illustrates this with a simple example.

Different Shapes, the Same Sweetness

During festivals such as Diwali, sweets made entirely of sugar may be shaped like a horse, an elephant, a man, or a woman.

Children may argue over them:

I want the man!
I want the horse!

The parents know something the children overlook.

The shapes are different, but the sweetness is exactly the same.

Likewise, the forms of God's Avatars may differ, and a devotee may be more attracted to one than another. But whichever Avatar one worships, all possess unlimited powers and unlimited virtues. Their Divinity is absolutely equal.

The difference of form does not create a difference in God.

Where This Inquiry Leads

When God descends, He does not acquire a material body. The Bhagavad Gita establishes that His birth and actions are Divine, and the scriptures establish that the bodies of all His descensions are complete and eternal.

Nor is God divided among His Avatars. Every Avatar is perfect and complete. To consider one's chosen form of God superior and another form inferior is Namaparadh.

Shri Ram and Shri Krishna have special significance not because They possess more Divinity, but because more leelas were revealed during Their descensions. Those leelas make it easier for devotees to remember God and attach their minds to Him.

Like sugar sweets of different shapes, God's forms may appear different while their essential completeness remains unchanged. Every Avatar possesses unlimited powers and virtues, and their Divinity is absolutely equal.

But if God is not restricted to a few greater or lesser Avatars, another question naturally arises:

How many forms can God have? Must we worship only the Avatars specifically described in the scriptures?

Every descension of God has a Divine, eternal body and is complete; Shri Ram and Shri Krishna are not more Divine merely because more of their leelas are revealed. If no Avatar possesses less of God, the inquiry now turns outward: are God's forms confined to the familiar Avatars described in scripture?
