Redeemer of Sinners

A feared robber encounters Mahaprabhu Chaitanya in a dangerous forest, where an unexpected meeting changes the course of his life.

Mahaprabhu Chaitanya approaches Naoroji and his armed companions in a forest in southern India.
Despite warnings about the notorious robber, Mahaprabhu Ji entered the forest without fear.

In the Choranandi forest lived a notorious gang of robbers led by Naoroji, a cruel and violent man whose very name struck fear into people's hearts.

During his pilgrimage through southern India, Mahaprabhu Chaitanya was warned repeatedly not to pass through this forest.

But Mahaprabhu Ji was undeterred.

"Robbers steal people's wealth," He said. "I have renounced the world and live on alms. What could they possibly take from me? Even if they take my life, I would consider myself fortunate that this body could be of service to someone."

With these words, Mahaprabhu Ji entered the forest.

After walking for some time, He rested beneath the shade of a tree and began chanting the Holy Names of God.

An Unexpected Encounter

Naoroji's informants soon told him that a renunciate had entered the forest.

Accompanied by his men, Naoroji went to have Mahaprabhu Ji's darshan. He respectfully invited Him to his home for dinner.

Mahaprabhu Ji declined.

"I am a renunciate. I stay beneath trees and eat only what I receive in alms. Whatever you offer me as alms, I will gladly accept."

Naoroji immediately instructed his men to prepare a feast for Him.

While they were arranging the food, Mahaprabhu Ji became completely absorbed in the loving remembrance of His Beloved Shri Krishna.

He lost all bodily consciousness.

At times, He sang in Divine ecstasy. At other times, He danced with such abandon that His feet scattered the food placed before Him.

Naoroji and his companions sat around Mahaprabhu Ji, mesmerized by His extraordinary state of Divine Love.

Naoroji's Change of Heart

Naoroji was now about sixty years old.

Since childhood, he had lived by robbery and violence. He had killed and terrorized countless people.

Yet witnessing Mahaprabhu Ji's extraordinary love for Shri Krishna had a profound effect on him.

Overwhelmed, Naoroji fell at Mahaprabhu Ji's lotus feet and pleaded:

"My Lord! You have cast a spell over me. Upon seeing You, my mind has become completely detached from this world.

"From now on, I wish only to remain under the shelter of Your lotus feet and sing the glories of Shri Krishna.

"O Lord! I was born into a Brahmin family, but since childhood, I have engaged in cruelty and robbery. Seeing You has completely transformed me.

"Nothing appeals to me anymore except the shelter of Your lotus feet. Please bless me with the dust of Your lotus feet. Please initiate me with the same mantra that fills Your heart with such deep love for God."

Hearing Naoroji's sincere repentance and longing for Divine Love, Mahaprabhu Ji replied:

"Naoroji! You are greatly blessed to have developed such feelings at this age.

"Singing the glories of Shri Krishna is the true purpose of human life. All worldly wealth and luxuries are temporary.

"Be assured that the merciful Lord bestows His Grace upon those who pray to Him with steadfast love and devotion, even if they have committed countless sins in the past.

"The causelessly merciful Lord has already blessed you with a pure intellect. Now, always sing His glories from the depths of your heart."

Hearing these words, Naoroji became immersed in the bliss of Divine Love and surrendered himself completely at Mahaprabhu Ji's lotus feet.

Leaving Everything Behind

The following morning, Mahaprabhu Ji prepared to leave the forest.

Naoroji threw down his weapons and turned to his companions.

"Brothers! I have committed countless sins and caused suffering to so many people.

"With these hands, I have robbed millions and spent millions. But now I have become a beggar.

"I will beg for my food and spend the rest of my life performing devotion to Shri Krishna.

"Please forgive me for everything I have done. Bless me so that I may spend the rest of my life serving my Guru, immersed in love for Shri Krishna."

With these words, Naoroji abandoned his former life and left the forest with Mahaprabhu Ji.

Takeaway

God and God-realized Saints are Patita Pavana (पतित पावन) — Redeemers of the Fallen.

They do not reject a jeev because of past sins. They understand the jeev's present spiritual condition and know when and how to extend Grace.

No matter how sinful one's past has been, the path to God remains open.
