Sanchit Karm (संचित कर्म)

Sanchit Karm (संचित कर्म | sañcita karma) refers to the accumulated stockpile of karmas performed in previous human births for which the soul has not yet experienced the corresponding consequences.

Meaning

  • sañcita — accumulated, collected, stored
  • karma — action

Together, Sanchit Karma means accumulated karmic actions awaiting their results.

What It Means

Whenever a human being performs karmic actions, those actions generate future consequences.

Some consequences may be experienced immediately.

Others may not be experienced during the present lifetime.

Those unexperienced karmas become part of the soul's accumulated karmic storehouse known as Sanchit Karma.

In a future birth, actions performed in the present life are no longer viewed as present karma. They become part of this accumulated stockpile.

Understanding Through an Example

A girl may have one surname before marriage and a different surname after marriage.

The person remains the same, but the designation changes according to circumstance.

Similarly, an action performed in the present life may initially be regarded as a current karma.

However, when the soul enters a future birth without having experienced its consequence, that same karma becomes part of Sanchit Karma.

The karma has not changed.

Its classification has changed.

Key Insight

Sanchit Karma contains both:

  • punya (virtuous karmas)
  • paap (sinful karmas)

It is not a storehouse of only bad actions or only good actions.

It contains the accumulated karmic stock of countless previous human births.

According to Shri Maharaj Ji, this accumulation is effectively infinite from the perspective of the bound soul.

For this reason, liberation cannot be attained merely by attempting to exhaust karmic consequences one by one.
