The Three Eternal Entities: God, Soul, and Maya

Reality consists of three eternal truths: God, soul, and Maya. This article explains their relationship.

The Three Eternal Entities: God, Soul, and Maya

πŸ“ Where You Are in the Inquiry

You have seen that God is one.

You have seen that He is realized in different ways.

So a deeper question now arises:

πŸ‘‰ What is the complete structure of reality?

What exists alongside God?

The Three Eternal Entities

The Vedas declare that reality is not singular.

It consists of three eternal truths:

God.
The soul.
Maya.

These are not temporary.

πŸ‘‰ They have always existed and will always exist.

God β€” The Controller

God is the Supreme Reality.

He is:

The source of all power.
The master of all existence.
The controller of all.

He is independent.

Nothing governs Him.

The Soul β€” The Experiencer

The soul is conscious.

It is a tiny part of God.

It experiences:

Happiness.
Suffering.
Desire.

It is not independent.

It is dependent on God.

Maya β€” The Material Power

Maya is the material energy of God.

It is:

Inert.
Unconscious.
Without independent power.

It does not act on its own.

πŸ‘‰ It functions only under God’s control.

Relationship Between God, Soul, and Maya

God is the master.

The soul is dependent.

Maya is the instrument.

The soul interacts with Maya.

God governs both.

Sometimes the Vedas use the word Brahm broadly,
referring to God along with His powers.

At other times, they distinguish clearly between
God, the soul, and Maya.

The Essential Condition

The soul is under Maya.

Not by forceβ€”

But by its own direction.

When the soul turns away from God,
it remains under Maya.

When it turns toward Him,
it moves beyond Maya.

The Central Understanding

Reality is not one undifferentiated whole.
It consists of distinct yet related entities.

πŸ‘‰ God, soul, and Maya are eternally distinct and related.

Every living and non-living thing that exists falls into one of these three.

Where This Leads

If the soul is bound within Maya,
and God is beyond it,

then a question becomes unavoidable:

πŸ‘‰ What happens if the soul does not turn toward God?
