Why We Cannot Simply “Love God”
The mind cannot naturally love God while it still believes happiness exists in the world of Maya. Detachment weakens this illusion and gradually prepares the mind to turn toward Divine fulfillment.
📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry
Previously, we explored why detachment alone is not enough.
The mind cannot remain permanently empty.
If worldly attachment weakens, then attachment to God must gradually awaken.
But this raises a deeper and more uncomfortable question:
If God is:
- the source of eternal Bliss,
- infinitely beautiful,
- and the true object of the soul’s love,
then why does the mind not naturally run toward Him?
Why does the mind continue:
- chasing worldly pleasure,
- becoming attached to temporary objects,
- and repeatedly forgetting God?
If God alone can satisfy the soul,
then why can we not simply decide to love Him?
Why Detachment Cannot Be Skipped
Some people think:
“Why spend time cultivating detachment from the world? Why not simply love God directly?”
At first this sounds reasonable.
But the problem is much deeper than mere intention.
The mind cannot wholeheartedly move toward God while simultaneously remaining convinced that happiness still exists within the world of Maya.
As long as worldly attraction appears meaningful,
the mind repeatedly becomes divided.
Part of it wants God,
while another part continues running toward worldly fulfillment.
This inner contradiction prevents stable Divine attachment from arising.
With Which Mind Will You Love God?
People often say:
“I want to love God.”
But in which mind will this love arise?
The very same mind that must love God is already deeply attached to worldly objects.
For countless lifetimes, the mind has repeatedly moved toward:
- worldly pleasure,
- worldly identity,
- worldly relationships,
- and worldly desires.
These impressions do not disappear merely through intellectual decision.
The mind continues moving according to its deepest conditioning.
The Intellect Still Believes Happiness Exists in the World
Even after hearing spiritual truth, the intellect still secretly believes:
“Perhaps lasting happiness can still be found in the world.”
This belief is the root problem.
As long as the intellect remains convinced that worldly enjoyment can satisfy the soul, the mind naturally continues running outward.
The mind follows wherever the intellect perceives fulfillment.
This is why merely hearing:
“God is Bliss,”
does not instantly create Divine attachment.
Because worldly happiness still appears:
- visible,
- immediate,
- and emotionally convincing.
Whereas Divine Bliss remains:
- unseen,
- unknown,
- and not yet experienced.
The Mirage in the Desert
Suppose a thirsty traveler sees a mirage in the desert.
Even after being told:
“There is no water there,”
the traveler may still continue running toward it.
Why?
Because thirst remains,
and the illusion still appears real.
Similarly, even after hearing:
“Worldly happiness cannot satisfy the soul,”
the intellect still struggles to fully accept it.
The illusion of fulfillment within Maya continues appearing convincing.
Thus, the mind repeatedly returns toward worldly attachment again and again.
Why the Mind Cannot Attach Itself to God Naturally
The mind becomes attached wherever it believes happiness exists.
This is why worldly attachment appears natural.
The mind has repeatedly experienced:
- sensory pleasure,
- emotional excitement,
- worldly achievement,
- and temporary enjoyment.
Thus, the intellect has become habituated to believing:
“This is happiness.”
But Divine Bliss has not yet been experienced.
Therefore, attachment toward God does not yet feel natural to the impure mind.
The problem is not that God lacks attractiveness.
The problem is:
the material intellect still misunderstands where true happiness exists.
Detachment Prepares the Mind for Divine Attachment
This is why detachment becomes necessary in spiritual life.
Detachment gradually weakens the false conviction that worldly objects can fully satisfy the soul.
As this illusion weakens, the mind slowly becomes more capable of turning toward God.
Detachment does not itself create Divine love.
But it prepares the mind by reducing its absorption in Maya.
Only then can the mind gradually become fit for:
- Divine Grace,
- Divine knowledge,
- and genuine Divine attachment.
The Intellect Must Be Reeducated
For countless lifetimes, the intellect has repeatedly accepted:
- worldly pleasure as happiness,
- worldly success as fulfillment,
- and worldly attachment as meaningful.
Therefore, spiritual understanding must also be reinforced repeatedly.
The intellect must again and again contemplate:
- the temporary nature of worldly happiness,
- the suffering within material existence,
- and the incompleteness of worldly fulfillment.
Gradually, the false conviction weakens.
Only then does the mind begin turning more steadily toward God.

(Part 4 of 5 — Detachment)
This now raises another profound question:
Even if the mind begins turning toward God,
would simply seeing God automatically create devotion?
If God directly appeared before someone,
would realization immediately arise?
Or can the conditioned mind still fail to recognize Divine reality?
