Why Seeing God Does Not Automatically Create Devotion

Even direct perception of God does not guarantee realization. The material mind and intellect interpret Divine reality according to their conditioning. Only Divine Grace gradually purifies perception and enables true recognition.

Why Seeing God Does Not Automatically Create Devotion

📍 Where You Are in the Inquiry

Previously, we explored why the material mind cannot naturally love God.

The material intellect continues believing:

  • worldly happiness is real,
  • worldly fulfillment is possible,
  • and worldly attachment is meaningful.

Thus, even after hearing spiritual truth, the mind repeatedly runs toward Maya.

But this now raises another profound question:

If God directly appeared before someone,
would devotion automatically arise?

Would merely seeing God instantly:

  • destroy ignorance,
  • awaken Divine love,
  • and produce God-realization?

Or can the conditioned mind still fail to recognize Divine reality even while directly perceiving it?

Would Seeing God Automatically Create Love?

People often imagine:

“If I could directly see God, devotion would automatically arise.”

At first this appears reasonable.

But the scriptures repeatedly show otherwise.

During His earthly pastimes, countless people directly saw Shri Krishna.

Some:

  • loved Him,
  • worshipped Him,
  • and surrendered to Him.

But many others:

  • opposed Him,
  • doubted Him,
  • feared Him,
  • or considered Him an ordinary human being.

Even though they saw the same Shri Krishna,
their understanding differed completely.

Why?

Because realization does not depend merely upon physical sight.

The inner condition of the mind and intellect determines perception.

God’s Divine Form Cannot Be Perceived Materially

Physical eyes can only perceive external form.

They cannot independently recognize Divine reality.

The eyes merely transmit impressions.

Interpretation occurs within the mind and intellect.

If the intellect remains material, it continues interpreting reality through worldly understanding.

Thus, even while seeing God externally, the conditioned intellect may still fail to recognize His true nature.

This is why merely seeing does not guarantee realization.

Different People Saw Shri Krishna Differently

The mind does not perceive reality objectively.

It perceives according to:

  • prior conditioning,
  • desires,
  • attachments,
  • ego,
  • and accumulated impressions.

This is why different people responded completely differently to Shri Krishna.

Some perceived:

  • God,
  • Divine beauty,
  • and Divine compassion.

Others perceived:

  • merely another human being,
  • a political threat,
  • or even something frightening and objectionable.

The external object remained the same.

But perception differed according to the inner state of mind.

Different People Saw Shri Ram Differently

The scriptures similarly describe how people perceived Shri Ram differently during the assembly of King Janak.

Some experienced:

  • Divine beauty,
  • reverence,
  • and spiritual attraction.

Others saw:

  • merely a human prince,
  • an ordinary warrior,
  • or someone incapable of lifting Shiv Ji’s bow.

The same Shri Ram stood before everyone.

Yet each person perceived according to the condition of their own consciousness.

This reveals an important spiritual truth:

Divine reality is not recognized merely through physical sight.

Why Some Became Fearful Instead of Devotional

Not everyone who encountered God developed devotion.

Some became fearful.
Some became hostile.
Some became envious.
Some opposed Him directly.

Why?

Because the disposition of their intellect interpreted Divine reality according to its own impurities.

A material mind filled with:

  • ego,
  • fear,
  • pride,
  • attachment,
  • or hatred,

projected its own nature onto Divine reality and perceived God according to its own impurities.

Thus, Divine presence alone does not guarantee Divine realization.

Only Devotees Recognized the Divine Form

The scriptures repeatedly show that devotees perceived Divine reality differently from ordinary people.

Why?

Because their minds had been purified and made divine through devotion and Divine Grace.

Thus, they perceived:

  • Divine beauty,
  • Divine compassion,
  • and Divine Bliss,

where others perceived only ordinary external form.

Recognition of Divine reality depends upon spiritual eligibility and inner purification.

Not merely external sight.

Material Vision Cannot Understand Divine Actions

The material intellect cannot properly understand Divine actions.

When God performs human-like pastimes, the material intellect evaluates them through worldly logic.

Thus people may:

  • criticize Divine actions,
  • misunderstand Divine behavior,
  • or impose material judgment upon Divine reality.

This is why scriptures repeatedly warn that Divine Personalities cannot be fully understood through material intellect alone.

One May Even Reject God

The scriptures further show that some people not only failed to recognize God —
they directly opposed Him.

Some criticized Him.
Some insulted Him.
Some considered Him ordinary.
Some even rejected His Divinity completely.

This reveals the profound power of Maya.

Even direct Divine presence does not automatically destroy ignorance.

As long as the intellect remains materially conditioned, misunderstanding can continue.

Simple Examples to Illustrate the Point

An ant sits upon a pile of sugar,
yet continues tasting the grain of salt already held in its mouth.

A fish remains surrounded by water,
yet dies of thirst because it refuses to open its mouth.

Similarly, Divine Bliss may be infinitely present,
yet the conditioned soul continues remaining absorbed in Maya due to prior conditioning and distorted perception.

Divine Grace Is Necessary

This is why realization cannot be achieved merely through:

  • logic,
  • intellectual effort,
  • physical observation,
  • or external sight.

The soul requires Divine Grace.

Only Divine Grace can gradually purify:
the mind
and the intellect.

As purification deepens, the mind gradually becomes capable of recognizing God.

Then:

  • devotion awakens,
  • attachment toward God deepens,
  • and true realization gradually unfolds.

Why a Divine Guru Becomes Necessary

If the material intellect cannot independently recognize Divine God,
then how can a person correctly understand:

  • God,
  • the spiritual path,
  • or the means of God-realization?

The scriptures therefore repeatedly declare the necessity of a true God-realized Saint.

Such a Saint does not merely provide information.

A true Saint gradually:

  • corrects material understanding,
  • guides the soul toward proper understanding of God,
  • guides the soul beyond Maya,
  • and helps awaken genuine Divine perception through Divine Grace.

Without such guidance, the material intellect continues misinterpreting God and His laws according to worldly perception.

(Part 5 of 5 — Detachment)

Detachment from the world gradually weakens worldly absorption.
But detachment alone is not enough.

Even direct perception of God in-person does not guarantee realization,
because the material mind and intellect remain covered by Maya.

Thus, the scriptures repeatedly emphasize the necessity of proper spiritual guidance under a true God-realized Saint.

This now leads to the next inquiry:

Why Is a True Saint Necessary for God-Realization?
