Varnashram Dharma (वर्णाश्रम धर्म)

Varnashram Dharma is the Vedic system of duties based on varna and ashram, designed to support society and spiritual growth.

Varnashram Dharma (वर्णाश्रम धर्म | varṇāśrama dharma) refers to the system of duties prescribed by the Vedas according to a person's varna (social function) and ashram (stage of life).

The Vedas prescribe different religious, social, and occupational duties for different individuals based upon these classifications. These duties are collectively known as Varnashram Dharma.

The Structure of Varnashram Dharma

The Vedas describe four varnas and four ashrams.

Together, these create sixteen possible combinations of social and spiritual responsibilities.

The Vedic scriptures contain extensive guidance regarding the duties associated with these classifications and how they should be performed.

Many portions of the Vedas, Smritis, and Itihas literature are devoted to explaining these duties in detail.

Purpose of Varnashram Dharma

The purpose of Varnashram Dharma is to promote the orderly functioning of human society while supporting spiritual development.

By prescribing duties appropriate to different temperaments and stages of life, the Vedas provide a framework through which individuals can live harmoniously and gradually progress spiritually.

For this reason, Varnashram Dharma occupies an important place within Vedic civilization and is discussed extensively in scriptures such as the Mahabharat.
