Sankirtan (संकीर्तन)

Sankirtan (संकीर्तन)

Sankirtan (संकीर्तन | saṁkīrtana) refers to the congregational Kirtan of God's names, attributes, Leelas, and other Divine glories.

In Sankirtan, many devotees sing together, often accompanied by musical instruments, while remembering God in the mind.

Why Is Sankirtan Beneficial?

Sankirtan helps engage the aspirant's faculties together in devotion. The voice sings, the ears hear the Divine names and glories, the body may participate through clapping or playing musical instruments, and the mind remains engaged in Smaran.

The combined sound of congregational Kirtan and musical accompaniment also helps drown out external noises and distractions, making it easier to keep the mind focused on God.

Sankirtan also carries a collective benefit. The power of the breath and voices of all those chanting combines, creating a devotional atmosphere that benefits everyone participating.

Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu expressed the far-reaching power of Sankirtan: even small creatures that cannot themselves chant the Divine Name may hear Hari Naam and thereby receive its benefit.
