Brahmanda (ब्रह्माण्ड)

Brahmanda (ब्रह्माण्ड)

Brahmand (ब्रह्माण्ड | brahmāṇḍa) means cosmic egg—an egg-shaped cosmic realm consisting of fourteen major lokas (worlds or planes of existence), many of which support life.

The material world, called sansar, contains countless brahmands.

Each brahmand has three governing deities, collectively known as the Tridev:

  • Brahma, who creates it.
  • Vishnu, who sustains it.
  • Shankar, who destroys it at the end of its lifespan.

The fourteen major material lokas consist of seven upper and seven lower lokas, with Earth (Bhoo Lok) included among the upper seven.

Although each brahmand is part of the material creation governed by Maya, the existing cosmological account also describes a divine Vaikunth Lok within a brahmand. Being divine, Vaikunth is not made of Maya.
