Anartha Nivriti
Anarth Nivritti refers to the dissipation of unwanted tendencies and impurities that obstruct devotion.
- anartha — that which is not meaningful or beneficial for the soul
- nivṛtti — removal or cessation
It is the stage in Bhakti where inner obstacles begin to weaken and fall away.
What It Is
Anarth Nivritti is the stage in which:
- Unwanted tendencies (anarthas) begin to diminish
- The mind becomes less attracted to the material world
- Obstacles in devotion gradually lose their hold
These anarthas are not natural to the soul, but acquired through long association with the material world.
Its Place in Bhakti
Bhakti unfolds in a sequence:
- Sādhana Bhakti — effort to attach the mind to God
- Anarth Nivritti — purification begins
- Niṣṭhā and beyond — steadiness and deeper absorption
Anarth Nivritti arises as a result of continued practice in Sādhana Bhakti.
What Happens in This Stage
During Anarth Nivritti:
- The mind still fluctuates, but with reduced intensity
- Material distractions continue, but their influence weakens
- Devotion becomes less obstructed
The process is gradual — impurities are not removed instantly, but dissolve over time through practice.
Key Insight
Anarth Nivritti is not achieved by force.
It occurs as a natural consequence of engaging the mind in devotion.
As the mind turns toward God, what is opposed to Him automatically begins to fade.
In Context
Anarth Nivritti belongs to the process of Bhakti Yoga, marking the stage where the heart begins to be cleansed of obstacles, allowing devotion to deepen.
