Akash

Akash

Akash (आकाश | ākāśa) is commonly understood as sky or space, but in Vedic terminology it carries deeper meanings depending on context.

At the material level, Ākāśa is one of the panch mahabhoot (five gross elements). It represents space—the subtlest of the material elements—and is the first gross element to manifest in the process of creation (sṛiṣṭi).

At a higher level, the Vedas also use the word Akash as a name for Brahm (the Supreme God), indicating His great powers.

Thus, the term Akash may refer to:

  • Material space (as an element of creation)
  • Akash (when used for God) refers to the Supreme Divine Personality Shri Krishna in which all existence is contained—within whom infinite universes reside, and by whom all is sustained.
