On Whose Strength Did Uddhav Challenge Maya?

Uddhav boldly challenged the invincible Maya. Discover whose strength gave him the confidence to do so.

On Whose Strength Did Uddhav Challenge Maya?

Maya is God's own power and operates under His control. No jeev can overcome her through their own efforts. So when the Bhagavata, the greatest of the Puraṇas, says that Uddhav challenged Maya , it seems like an impossible claim.

How could a devotee, no matter how great, dare to confront a power that even the greatest sages and seers have failed to conquer?

The Challenge of the Sages and Seers

Lord Shri Krishna stated that Uddhav is not even slightly inferior to Him, as he is embodied with all the knowledge, love, and renunciation that Krishna possesses. This same Uddhav understood that even great scholars (gyani), meditators (dhyani), and observers of Vedic laws cannot overcome Maya in millions of years.

Tulsidas Ji echoes this, saying that great personalities like Narada, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shankar also could not win over Maya. God Himself has thrown an open challenge in the Gita: "Arjun, the one who surrenders to Me, I will free him from Maya." No one can be free from Maya based on their own efforts.

So, how could Uddhav be so confident?

Uddhav's Solution for Conquering Maya

He didn't rely on his own power and directly admitted it in front of Krishna. Uddhav said, "I will use all the finest items that You use after you have used them. You wear the precious necklaces, use the finest perfumes, adorn yourself in silky clothes like your peetambar, and wear exquisite ornaments. Then You give them away as Prasad to your devotees. The most important item is the leftover food eaten by You. By accepting everything You have used as Your Prasada, I can overcome Maya."

Then he challenged Krishna: "Even though I am using the finest items Maya can produce, Your mighty Maya cannot make me succumb to her."

Uddhav was not seeking these objects for their material enjoyment. He accepted them as Shri Krishna's Prasad, with his mind lovingly attached to Him. Although the objects themselves belonged to Maya, his sentiment was directed toward Krishna.

The Power of Prasad

Uddhav's challenge reveals a profound truth. Maya is God's own power, and no jeev can overcome her through personal effort, however great their knowledge, austerity, or renunciation.

Uddhav knew this. He was not relying on his own strength.

Thus, Uddhav challenged Maya not through his own power, but through the grace of Shri Krishna.
