Practical Sādhana — Living the Path

Practical Form of Bhakti

Practical Sādhana — Living the Path

The Practical Question

If the mind must remain attached to God,

then how can one live in the world
and still remain in that attachment?

The body must perform duties.

The mind must remember God.

This appears to be a contradiction.

The Apparent Contradiction

Worldly actions require attention.

Remembrance of God also requires attention.

So it seems:

either one performs duties
or one remembers God

but not both together.

The Real Distinction

This confusion arises from a mistake.

Involvement is not the same as attachment.

The mind and intellect may be engaged in action,

yet attachment may remain elsewhere.

Attachment and Duty

The instruction is not to stop action.

The instruction is to change attachment.

Perform all worldly duties,

but withdraw attachment from the world

and place it in God alone.

The Nature of Attachment

The mind is made to love.

It cannot remain without attachment.

If attachment is removed from one place,

it will go elsewhere.

Therefore,

do not make the mind empty.

Redirect it.

Why Detachment Improves Action

Attachment creates:

  • bias
  • imbalance
  • emotional disturbance

Actions performed with attachment
often become irregular.

When attachment is removed,

actions become clearer,
steadier,
and more appropriate.

The Practical Form of Bhakti

Fix the mind in God.

Let the body perform its duties.

Remain inwardly attached to Him,
while outwardly engaged in the world.

This is the practical form of Bhakti.

It Becomes Natural

In the beginning,
this requires effort.

The mind slips,
forgets,
and returns to the world.

But with repeated practice,

remembrance becomes easier.

Gradually,

it becomes natural.

The Living Example

This state is not theoretical.

Devotees have lived this way—

performing all duties,
while remaining inwardly absorbed in God.

This proves:

simultaneous remembrance is possible.

The Next Inquiry

Even sincere effort can be lost.

The mind is easily influenced.

Association shapes its direction.

Negative association
slowly weakens remembrance
and draws the mind back to the world.

Therefore,

after understanding how to practice,

From Understanding to Practice

This understanding must now be lived.

The mind must be trained
to remain attached to God,
while the body continues its duties.

For this, structured daily practice is necessary.

Sadhana provides:

  • a fixed time for focused remembrance
  • a method to engage the mind in God
  • a way to gradually deepen attachment
  • a way to preserve that remembrance throughout the day

Without such structure,
the mind returns to its old habits.
