dakshina | दक्षिणा
Dakshina (Devanagari: दक्षिणा ISO15919: dakṣiṇā) is an offering a disciple makes to their Guru to show gratitude. It can be monetary or anything else the Guru asks for.
The Debt and Purpose
Disciples feel incredibly indebted to their Guru for imparting knowledge that was otherwise unattainable. Because the disciple can never fully repay this spiritual debt, they serve the Guru to please Him and show deep gratitude.
Customary Occasions
While dakshina is ultimately given according to the teacher's desire, the act of offering askshina also serves to fructify the education (whether material or spiritual) into practical action. There are customary occasions for the offering:
- Completion of Study: When a student finishes their education (e.g., Ekalavya offered dakshina to Guru Droṇacharya, and Shri Krishna offered dakshina to Guru Durvasa and Sadipani Muni).
- Guru's Visit: When the Guru visits a devotee's residence, devotees offer it as a token of gratitude.
- After a Feast: The disciple gives dakshina after hosting a feast for the Guru.
