Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the 2nd day of the waxing moon in the month of Kartik.
It is an auspicious festival observed after Deepawali, celebrating the bond of love and affection between a brother and sister.

According to tradition, after the destruction of Narakasura, Shri Krishna visited his sister, who welcomed Him with love and devotion. This event forms the basis of the festival, where sisters offer prayers for the well-being of their brothers.

In the devotional tradition, devotees of Shri Krishna celebrate this day by relating to Him as their brother. They offer tilak, prepare food with love, and express affection in a spirit of personal connection. This transforms the festival from a social bond into a divine relationship.

For a seeker, this reflects a deeper truth. The soul shares every possible relationship with God—friend, child, beloved, or even brother. By changing one’s sentiment (bhav) toward God, devotion becomes more intimate and personal. Such loving connection strengthens attachment to the Divine and makes remembrance natural and heartfelt.
