Sutra (Devanagari: सूत्र; ISO 15919: sūtra) refers to an aphorism or a dense, codified verse.

The Thread of Knowledge Literally meaning "thread," a Sutra is a highly condensed Sanskrit verse that packs vast philosophical meaning into the fewest possible words.

• Usage: These aphorisms are the foundation of major scriptural texts, such as the Vedant darshan (Brahma Sutras).
