Panchtanmatra — Five Subtle Elements
At the time of creation tamas guna of Maya creates five subtle elements. Together these are call panchtanmatra (Devanagari: पंचतन्मात्रा ISO15919: paṁcatanmātrā ).
Each of these elements creates one of the Panch mahabhoot . The originating subtle element becomes the quality of the originated gross element.
The five subtle elements are listed below
Sound
Sound is called shabdatanmatra (Devanagari: शब्द तन्मात्रा ISO15919: śabda tanmātrā ). It is simply referred to as shabd called (Devanagari: शब्द ISO15919: śabda ) as well.
Shabd creates space . So, shabd becomes the quality of element space .
Touch
Touch is called sparshtanmatra (Devanagari: स्पर्श तन्मात्रा ISO15919: sparśa tanmātrā ). It is simply referred to as s parsh (Devanagari: स्पर्श ISO15919: sparśa ) as well.
Sparsh creates gross element air . So, s parsh becomes the primary quality of air .
Form
Form is called rooptanmatra (Devanagari: रूप तन्मात्रा ISO15919: rūpa tanmātrā ). It is simply referred to as roop (Devanagari: रूप ISO15919: rūpa ) as well.
Roop creates gross element fire . So, roop becomes the primary quality of fire .
Taste
Taste is called rastanmatra (Devanagari: रस तन्मात्रा ISO15919: rasa tanmātrā ). It is simply referred to as ras (Devanagari: रस ISO15919: rasa ) as well.
Ras creates gross element water . So, ras becomes the primary quality of gross element water .
Smell
Smell is called gandhtanmatra (Devanagari: गंध तन्मात्रा ISO15919: gaṁdha tanmātrā ). It is simply referred to as gandh (Devanagari: गन्ध ISO15919: gandha ) as well.
Gandh creates gross element earth . So, gandh becomes the primary quality of earth .
