The Endless Cycle of 8.4 Million Life Forms

Every soul has wandered endlessly through 8.4 million life forms—sometimes as celestial beings, sometimes human, sometimes rakshasas, animals, birds, or even trees [1]. We have even come face-to-face with God countless times. After all, He is all-pervading, present in every particle of creation, and seated within our very hearts.

Yet, despite this proximity, we have not benefited from His presence. We remain bound in ignorance, tossed about by the cycle of birth and death.

The Hidden Presence of God Within

God is within us, watching every thought that crosses our mind. Still, in this secret presence, He does not intervene to rescue us from Maya. He silently observes while anger, greed, lust, and pride overpower us.

Does this mean God does not help? Not at all. In fact, His grace has been with us from the very start of life itself.

God’s Everyday Grace in Our Lives

When we were helpless in the mother’s womb, it was God who arranged nourishment through her food. At birth, He provided milk in her breast, since we had no teeth to chew. Later, when milk was no longer enough, He gave us teeth so we could eat and grow.

This everyday kindness is samanya kripa (ordinary grace)—the support every soul receives to survive and sustain life [2].

The Grace That Truly Liberates

But there is a higher grace—adbhut krpa (extraordinary grace)—that alone can free us from Maya’s clutches [3]. This liberating grace is not given automatically. God does not reveal His full presence within us, nor does He force us to turn towards Him. Instead, He waits for our heart to be purified through devotion.

Why a Guru is Indispensable

Here is where the Guru enters. The Guru awakens us to God’s presence within our heart. He reveals our eternal relationship with Him. He explains that only by fully accepting God as our very own can we receive His special grace.

The Guru teaches us how to practice devotion in a practical way, guiding us step by step to purify our mind. And when the disciple has done his part sincerely, the Guru infuses divine power into the mind, making it fit for God’s revelation.

How the Guru Reveals God to the Soul

When the disciple’s heart is finally pure, God manifests before the soul—because it is His unchanging vow that He only reveals Himself to the pure-hearted.

The world accepts only the successful and rejects the fallen. In the same way, God accepts only the pure and banishes the impure. But the Guru’s compassion surpasses even God’s justice. Where the world neglects, and even God withholds, the Guru uplifts the downtrodden, delivering those who have no hope.

Moral:
God sustains us every moment, but only through the Guru do we receive the key to His highest grace. Without the Guru, God remains hidden. With the Guru, even the most fallen soul can reach Him.
