Fact vs. Fiction: Can We Believe the Vedic Scriptures?

Modern intellect often struggles to accept scriptural accounts that defy current laws of biology and physics, such as the grafting of animal heads onto humans or individuals living for millions of years. While science has advanced significantly, these feats remain impossible today, leading many to view them as works of fiction. However, it is essential to recognize that one's beliefs are often limited by personal experience. Even in the current era, rare individuals demonstrate superhuman abilities, such as resisting extreme cold or stopping moving trains with bare hands, hinting at powers that exist beyond the average human capability.
The disparity between scriptural accounts and modern reality can be explained by the changing nature of the world across different eras, or yugas. In earlier times like Satyuga, physical and spiritual powers were at their peak because the mode of goodness was predominant. During these periods, people could attain divine siddhis or powers by pleasing God, allowing them to achieve feats that seem miraculous now. Just as physical strength has withered over time—evidenced by historical figures like Maharana Pratap, who fought while carrying over 300 kilograms of equipment (armor, weapons etc)—spiritual potency has also diminished in the current age.
Vedic scriptures are authentic because they were authored by God-realized saints possessing divine intellect. These saints could perceive the past, present, and future, and their resolutions carried the power to manifest reality. Because most people today lack the spiritual state to fathom such power, they also lack the experiential evidence to validate it. Nonetheless, these scriptures serve as the foundation for vast fields of knowledge, including mathematics and space science, and have led countless practitioners to the ultimate goal of life.
Attempting to resolve these doubts through independent study often leads to further confusion, as the true essence of sacred texts is best understood under the guidance of a spiritual master. Rather than dismissing these stories as fiction, seekers are encouraged to practice devotion as prescribed. As one progresses in bhakti, the truth behind these seemingly impossible examples begins to reveal itself. Ultimately, full understanding is reached only upon attaining God-realization, where one gains access to divine powers and the wisdom to comprehend how such miracles are performed.
