The Saint (Guru) — The Guide

The Saint (Guru) — The Guide

We have understood:

The world cannot give lasting happiness.
The mind must become detached.
Surrender is necessary.

Yet even after all this, something remains incomplete.

A deeper question arises:

If God is beyond the mind and intellect,
how can He ever be known?

Between the soul and God,
there is a necessary link.

Without this link,
the goal cannot be attained.

That link is:

a God-realized Saint.

Why This Is Necessary

God is not an object of perception.

He is beyond:

  • the senses
  • the mind
  • the intellect

So He cannot be reached
by personal effort alone.

Even extensive:

  • rituals
  • good actions
  • scriptural study

do not remove the bondage of karma.

The Role of the Spiritual Master

A true Spiritual Master:

  • knows God directly
  • understands the scriptures
  • guides the aspirant correctly

He shows:

  • which path to follow
  • how to proceed
  • how to resolve inner obstacles

Without such guidance,
the path cannot be walked properly.

What Is a True Saint

A Saint is not merely:

  • a scholar
  • a speaker
  • or a learned person

A true Saint is one who:

  • has realized God
  • is established in Him

From that realization,
true knowledge arises naturally.

The Real Difficulty

Recognizing such a Saint is not easy.

Because:

He is beyond the reach of:

  • senses
  • mind
  • intellect

So he cannot be fully understood
through ordinary perception.

Yet It Must Be Done

Even though it is difficult,
it cannot be avoided.

Without recognizing a true Saint,
the goal cannot be attained.

And yet:

countless souls have done so in the past.

So it is possible.

The Limitation of Judgment

It is natural to think:

“I will evaluate and decide
who is genuine.”

But this approach has a limitation.

Trying to judge a realized Saint
using an untrained intellect
is like:

a child trying to evaluate a scholar.

The Four Kinds of Teachers

To understand this better,
we must distinguish between types.

There are four kinds:

1. Divine within, saintly outwardly

Rare, but easier to recognize.

2. Divine within, ordinary outwardly

Most genuine Saints belong here.

Their Divinity is hidden.
So they are difficult to recognize.

3. Worldly within and outwardly

Easy to identify.

4. Worldly within, saintly outwardly

The most difficult to identify.

They appear spiritual,
but are not established in God.

The Real Challenge

The true difficulty is this:

How to distinguish between:

  • one who is Divine within but appears ordinary
  • and one who appears saintly but is not

External behavior alone is not sufficient.

A Deeper Understanding

After God-realization:

  • ignorance cannot return
  • sorrow cannot arise
  • Divine knowledge remains forever

Such a person is beyond Maya.

Yet, externally,
their actions may appear ordinary.

Why This Confuses Us

History shows that even great personalities:

  • experienced confusion
  • appeared emotional
  • behaved in ways that seem human

But internally,
they remained established in God.

The Key Insight

External appearance does not reveal inner reality.

So relying only on what is visible
can lead to error.

The Limitation of the Intellect

At this point, something must be understood.

The intellect that is under Maya
cannot fully comprehend
what is beyond Maya.

So the actions of God
and those established in Him
cannot always be understood.

The State of a Saint

A true Saint is no longer a doer.

  • desires are finished
  • karmas are finished
  • personal motivation is finished

He does not act independently.

Then Who Acts?

God acts through him.

He becomes an instrument.

Whatever actions are seen
are not his own.

They are Divine.

An Illustration

A vehicle moves on the road.

It appears to act.

But it has no independent power.

The driver is the one acting.

In the same way:

The Saint is the instrument.
God is the doer.

The Final Understanding

From the outside:

a Saint’s actions may appear ordinary.

But in reality:

they are beyond Maya.

They are Divine.

And their purpose is always:

the welfare of the soul.

The Turning Point

Now the situation becomes clear:

The path cannot be walked alone.
The truth cannot be discovered independently.

Guidance is not optional.

It is essential.

The Next Step

We have now understood:

The path cannot be discovered independently.
A true Spiritual Master is necessary to guide the soul.

But another question naturally arises:

Which path should be followed?

The Many Paths Described

The scriptures describe multiple approaches:

  • action (karma)
  • knowledge (gyan)
  • devotion (bhakti)

Each is presented as a path.

Each appears valid.

Yet they do not all lead in the same way.

The Need for Clarity

Without proper understanding:

one may follow a path sincerely,
and yet not reach the goal.

So before proceeding further,
these paths must be understood clearly.

The Order of Inquiry

We will examine them step by step:

First:
👉 the path of action (karma)

Then:
👉 the path of knowledge (gyan)

And its relationship with devotion

The Direction Ahead

Through this, a deeper clarity will emerge:

  • what action can do
  • what knowledge can do
  • and where their limitations lie

Only then can the final path be understood correctly.

The Next Inquiry

👉 What is the true nature of action,
and can it lead to God?
