diwali (Devanagari: दिवाली; ISO 15919: divālī) is the appearance day of Mahalakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. This is also the day when Shri Rama returned to Ayodhya on a vimana, aerial vehicle, after killing Ravana in Lanka. The citizens of Ayodhya lit up the city with earthen lamps, dipas, to welcome Him.
