Why Was I Born
Why was I born? Discover Vedic insights on life’s purpose, the soul’s quest for bliss, and why worldly achievements don’t fulfill our deepest longing.
The Purpose of Life
Many people question the purpose of their life. This article explores the spiritual, emotional, and philosophical meaning behind our existence.
Our Vedas categorically state that purpose - Every being, without exception, desires only one thing—Ananda or Bliss.
No matter what we chase—wealth, education, fame, or relationships—all pursuits end with the same underlying motive: "I want to be happy." We may change the object of our desire, but the desire for happiness itself never changes.
Why Do We All Seek Happiness? (Ananda)
This desire is universal because of the fundamental nature of the jiva, the individual soul. The soul is an eternal part (ansha) of God, and God alone is the embodiment of Bliss.
Just as rivers flow naturally toward the ocean to find their resting place, the soul naturally longs for its source—God. We are seeking the Infinite in a world of finite things.
Is There a Reason for My Birth?
We were not born to collect wealth, possessions, or worldly success. These are temporary and belong to the realm of Maya, the illusory material energy.
We were born to recognize that God alone is our true relative, and only He can grant the eternal happiness we seek.
The World as a Training Ground
The material world, with its mixture of joys and sorrows, was created as a training ground or a corrective facility for the jiva. Its purpose is to remind us through experience that lasting bliss is not found here. The fleeting nature of worldly pleasure is designed to turn us toward the permanent bliss of the Divine God.
Final Thoughts on the Meaning of Life
Thus, we are born to realize our eternal relationship with God and to attain Him, the ocean of bliss. When we place unwavering faith in this truth and turn toward Him, we fulfill the very purpose of our life. Everything else is transient.
