The composite word vairagya (Devanagari: वैराग्य ISO15919: vairāgya) is made from vigat (Devanagari: विगत ISO15919: vigata) and raga (Devanagari: राग ISO15919: rāga). The following two conditions have to be fulfilled to call it vairagya

  • giving up the aspiration of acquiring worldly matters AND
  • renunciation of having given up the worldly matters.

There are two types of renunciation: yukta – which is accepted, phalgu – which is to be rejected.

Vairagya is also one of the four compulsory qualifications a candidate for the jnana marga must have.
