The Three Realms of Habitat: Classifying Life on Earth
A concise guide to Vedic biological classification and the nature of Earthly life.
In this vast world the diversity of life is not just observed by species, but by the environments they inhabit. The life forms on Earth can be broadly classified into three primary categories based on their natural habitat: the waters, the land, and the sky.
Jalcar
- Jalcar (जलचर / Jalacara) are the beings that live within the water. From the smallest microorganisms to the largest aquatic creatures, Jalcar represents the foundational element of life—water—and the complex ecosystems thriving beneath the surface.
Bhūcar
- Bhoocar (भूचर / Bhūcara) category encompasses all life forms that live upon the land. Bhoocar includes humans, animals, and insects that move across the earth’s crust. It is within this realm that much of our observable karma and social structures unfold.
Khēcar (खेचर / Khēcara)
- Khēcar (खेचर / Khēcara) are those beings with the ability to fly. This includes birds and various winged insects.
