Tatastha Lakshana means secondary or functional qualities. Discover the difference between an object's essential nature and its utility in Vedic philosophy.

tatastha lakshana | तटस्थ लक्षण

Tatastha Lakshana (Devanagari: तटस्थ लक्षण; ISO 15919: taṭastha lakṣaṇa) refers to the secondary or functional qualities of an entity.

These are attributes that are not inherent to the object's eternal nature but are functional or circumstantial characteristics.

Example The tatastha lakshana of fire includes its utility for cooking food or heating homes. While fire performs these functions, they do not define its intrinsic existence (unlike heat and light, which are its essential or Svarupa qualities).
