The three debts mentioned by Manu in his Smriti that are called tririna (Devanagari: त्रिऋण ISO15919: trir̥ṇa). According to Manu Smriti jiva has to compulsorily repay these to attain mukti. These debts are

  • Deva Rin (Devanagari: देव ऋण​ ISO15919: deva r̥ṇa​​)  – debts to the celestial beings,
  • Rishi rin (Devanagari: ऋषि ऋण​ ISO15919: r̥ṣi r̥ṇa​) – debt to the sages,
  • Pittri Rin (Devanagari: पितृ ऋण​ ISO15919: pitr̥ r̥ṇa) – debt to the forefathers.

Other scriptures describe two more debts called

  • Bhuta Rin (Devanagari: भूत ऋण ISO15919: bhūta r̥ṇa​ )  – debt to other living beings,
  • Nri rina (Devanagari: नृ ऋण​ ISO15919: nr̥ r̥ṇa​) – debt to entire mankind.
