mandukakupa nyaya | मण्डूककूप न्याय

Mandukakupa Nyaya (Devanagari: मण्डूककूप न्याय; ISO 15919: maṇḍūkakūpa nyāya) refers to the Maxim of the Frog in the Well.

The Analogy A frog living in a well knows only that limited space and mistakes it for the entire universe. It cannot comprehend the vastness of the ocean unless someone from the outside enters, earns its trust, and leads it out to witness the ocean firsthand.

Spiritual Application Similarly, the Jiva (soul), limited by its material intellect and experience, cannot grasp the infinite nature of God. To bridge this gap, the soul must:

  1. Trust a Saint: Find a God-realized Saint who knows the "Ocean" (God).
  2. Accept as Guru: Surrender to their guidance.
  3. Practice Sadhana: Follow the prescribed spiritual discipline to eventually experience God.
