Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti marks the day when per the Hindu calendar the sun starts travelling back to the north. For the reason this day is considered to be auspicious.
That is why Bhishm Pitamah chose this day to leave his body. He waited for 6 months on a bed of arrows.
Makar Sankranti is a festival of harvest. Hindus from all the parts of India celebrate it every year with great cheer and devotion. It is also the day when the Sun-god starts ascending. It is reflected in this Vedic verse -
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय।
tamaso mā jyotirgamaya।
"May you ascend towards the unfathomable light (Supreme God) and never descend into utter darkness (Maya)."
This is one of the rarest festivals of India, which is always celebrated on the same day every year on either January 14 or January 15.
This is also the day when Jagadguruttam Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj was honored with the title of Jagadguruttam in 1957.
