The topmost lovers of The Divine Couple are highly exalted in the scriptures. During the descension of Shri Radha Krishna, they descended as maidens in the land of Braj. They harbor utterly selfless love (madhurya bhav) without any boundaries and serve Them only for Their pleasure. These women folk in the land of Braj are called gopi (Devanagari: गोपी; ISO 15919: gōpī).
