Sage Patanjali elucidated an eight-fold path for spiritual upliftment called ashtang yog ( Devanagari: अष्टांग योग ISO15919: aṣṭāṅga yōga): First five in this are for keep the body fit, and last three are for training the mind.
- yama - moral codes,
- niyama - self-disciple,
- asana - physical exercises,
- pranayama - breath control,
- pratyahara - withdrawing the mind from the senses.
- dharana - concentration,
- dhyana - deep meditation, and
- samadhi - union with the object of meditation.
