Sage Patanjali elucidated an eight-fold path for spiritual upliftment called ashtang yog ( Devanagari: अष्टांग योग​​​ ISO15919: aṣṭāṅga yōga): First five in this are for keep the body fit, and last three are for training the mind.

  1. yama - moral codes,
  2. niyama - self-disciple,
  3. asana - physical exercises,
  4. pranayama - breath control,
  5. pratyahara - withdrawing the mind from the senses.
  6. dharana - concentration,
  7. dhyana - deep meditation, and
  8. samadhi - union with the object of meditation.
