Commonly sky is called akasha (Devanagari: आकाश ISO15919: ākāśa) and there is more to it.
Akash is one of the elements of pancha mahabhuta which means empty space. This is the first gross element that is created during the process of srishti.
In Vedas The Supreme God is also called Akash.
